Industrial employment in South Carolina posted a gain for the second straight year according to the 2014 South Carolina Manufacturers’ Registrar.
South Carolina gained 1,967 manufacturing jobs from September 2012 to September 2013. This gain is slightly ahead of the national average. According to Manufacturer’s News, the Palmetto state is now home to 4,794 manufacturers employing 263,696 workers.
“The fact that people and companies want to work and grow in South Carolina is no accident – it’s what happens when you combine a dedicated workforce with a strong business environment – and that is a real reason to celebrate,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.
Greenville is the state’s leader in manufacturing employment, followed by Spartanburg, North Charleston, Greer and Anderson. The Upstate accounts for the largest share of industrial employment with 167,427 jobs, up almost one percent from a year ago.
The state’s leader of manufacturing employment remains in the industrial machinery and equipment sector. This sector accounts for 34,582 jobs. The transportation equipment sector ranks second employing 32,813.
