How to Deal with Negativity in the Workplace

Negative people tend to suck all the positive energy out of a room. They are exhausting to be around and even more tiring to deal with. Luckily, we have a few tips to dealing with these Negative Nancies, allowing you to enjoy your day.

Bad News Bearers – These employees can’t wait to tell you a client is peeved, the printer is out of whack or that Billy is on a rampage. They thrive on negative news and hardly ever offer solutions. That’s where you come in. To deal with Bad News Bearers, simply find a solution for the problem (if there is an actual problem) and move on. Listen and act. Maybe they’ll learn from you.

The Victims – Everything and everyone are out to get these people. Everyone is to blame for their circumstances, except them of course. How do you deal with these people? Focus on the positive when you’re around them, and set an example when things go wrong by taking ownership of your part in the process. You can also make them aware of their part by simply asking them what they could do differently to avoid certain situations.

Drama Queens – Ahhh drama. We love to hate it. The Drama Queen is the attention-seeker and the workload-exaggerator. Everything is the worst and most annoying for this employee. Solution? Ignore them. Don’t bite when they toss out their dramatic bait by saying, “Oh really? That sounds horrible!” Don’t give them any reaction at all. Soon, they’ll start keep their negative thoughts to themselves.

Whenever you feel yourself getting sucked into the negativity vortex, try one of these techniques to deal with it and bring some positivity back into your office.
