Ahhh, working from home. It has a nice ring to it.
But what about distractions? Will you actually get any work done? You will if you set a regular routine and adopt some best practices.
Keep regular office hours. – Do your best to set work hours and stick to them. Funnily enough, most people who work from home find they work too much rather than too little. So schedule breaks and give yourself time to recharge so you can be as productive as possible.
Structure your workday. – If you know you work best first thing in the morning, tackle your most important tasks then. Take advantage of your body’s natural rhythms, and plan your work around your most productive hours to maximize efficiency.
Get dressed. – Yes, staying in your pajamas all day sounds wonderful. But it is not a great work habit. Take the time to shower, eat breakfast, brush your teeth and get dressed in the morning. It will wake you up and get your ready for your workday.
Have a designated work area. – Whether it is your home office or your dining room table, try working at the same location ever day. This space should inspire you and make you happy. It should be somewhere you can function efficiently and do your best work.
Avoid distractions. – With no colleagues around, it can be easy to become distracted. Stay focused by limiting the time spent on email, social media and websites unrelated to your work. Also, put your phone on silent and only check it periodically for important calls.
