4 Insightful Questions to Start Asking Your Employees

Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 3.54.43 PMAs a business leader, it’s easy to get so caught up in guiding your team that you forget to listen to them. And when you fail to listen to your employees, you miss out on some of the smartest ideas for business growth.  Make time for individual conversations and let employees speak without interjecting. Here are four questions that will help generate insightful responses from your employees.

How can I do a better job of meeting your needs?

This question expresses to your employees that you’re here to serve them, not get them to serve you. It also helps your team see that you genuinely want their best, inspiring them to give you honest feedback. In turn, you’ll be able to use their candid answers to help you become a better leader.

What is our one thing?

Your “one thing” is what your business does better than anyone else – the trait that sets you apart, your reason for existence. Your employees’ answers will help you see, from their perspective, what truly makes you great. And if they can’t answer this question, make sure they learn. Employees who can’t express the why behind your business certainly can’t help you accomplish it.

Where would you like to be in two years?

If you want employees to help your business succeed, you must contribute to their success. This question shows that you care about their personal goals and are committed to helping them achieve them. Use their answers to help them find ways that their personal objectives match up with company goals, then set measurable targets to help them reach their goals. An employee who’s working towards their own personal goals while seeking to achieve the company’s objectives is irreplaceable.

What would you like to learn?

An employee is never more unmotivated than when they feel their job has grown stagnant. Inject energy into your employees’ careers by asking them where they’d like to learn, then helping them grow in those areas. They’ll be more productive and engaged, and you’ll benefit from inspired team members.
