Owning a small business presents many challenges, but one of the most difficult is the ongoing struggle to generate leads. Unfortunately, customers don’t just come to you – you must be proactive in order to grow a successful following. But business advice is everywhere these days, and it can be difficult to know where to start.
Here are four tips to help you build a simple, streamlined strategy to bring more customers in the door:
1) Provide helpful information; don’t just sell. – People generally distrust businesses that are constantly trying to sell them something. Instead, become a source of useful information related to your business. You’ll display your expertise and gain the respect of potential customers, making them more likely to come to you when they’re ready to buy.
2) Spend more time than money. – In order to build lasting relationships (the most powerful building block of any business) you must primarily spend time, not just money. Write handwritten notes to loyal customers. Keep in touch with clients and get to know them and their needs. Not only will this keep them coming back, but they’ll tell their friends.
3) Refine your message. – What’s that one thing you do better than anyone else – the thing that sets you apart? If you want to generate leads, this is the story you need to tell. This message should be in every piece you produce, from direct mail to social media, and everyone in your business needs to be able to tell it. If your organization communicates this message in an appealing way, you’ll gain the attention of prospective customers and make them want to join in.
4) Utilize current technology. – To generate leads, you must be where your customers are. In today’s world, this means mobile phones and Internet. List your business on online directories related to your industry; consistently connect with potential clients and industry insiders on Twitter; and optimize web content for mobile users. The more online touch points you provide for potential customers, the easier you will make it for them to connect with your business.
